Sweet ice cream makers for your home

Cool ice cream makers for your home

If you love ice cream but you're still searching for the perfect flavor, try concocting your own sweet creation. Homemade ice cream can save you some cash and it's more fun than buying a pint at your local grocery store. It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of soft serve or the harder variety, there are plenty of machines out there to suit your needs. Here are some of our favorites.

A countertop device that can produce up to 1.5-quarts of gelato or ice cream.

The ICE-100 ice cream and gelato maker from Cuisinart is fully-automatic and can make up to 1.5 quarts of ice cream. The 32-pound machine fits on a countertop—it’s 17 x 12 x 9-inches—but does take up enough space that you'll want to clear some room. The mixing process takes an hour, but then you have to freeze it to the desired texture. The ICE-100 comes with two churning paddles for different purposes. The gelato paddle helps introduce air into the mixture for a textured consistency. The ice cream paddle churns your dessert for ultimate creaminess. It sports touch controls, an LCD panel, and a 60-minute countdown makes sure the dessert reaches the right consistency.

The device has a built-in compressor freezer that lets you continually use the machine without having to pre-freeze the bowl.

The 2.1-quart Whynter Stainless Steel Ice Cream Maker has an LCD screen that displays the timer, internal temperature, and preparation mode. There are three settings to choose from—an ice cream mode, cooling mode, and mixing-only mode. If you want to add ingredients to your ice cream, press the pause button located on top to stop the mixing cycle and lift the device’s accessible lid. Both the mixing bowl and churning blade come out, making this one of the easier machines to clean. This 28-pound machine is tall—14-inches—so you want to make sure you have enough counter height. It also comes with a plastic scoop for serving your ice cream.

It makes four quarts of ice cream.

Use one of the 20 included recipes or make your own concoction with 4-quart, automatic Hamilton Beach ice cream maker. You can make anything from frozen yogurt to sorbet. Add the ingredients to the middle bucket, place ice around the sides of the container, and then add rock salt to the ice. The lid locks on to the top of the bucket and automatically spins so you don’t have to do any work. You’ll want to chill this bucket overnight beforehand.

A fun, quick option for soft serve.

If you're a fan of soft serve, the Cuisinart ICE-45 machine is for you. It can make 1.5-quarts of ice cream or frozen yogurt in about twenty minutes. It also has three built-in topping holders for sprinkles, M&Ms;, or other treats. It’s super-easy to use—just has an on/off switch—making it perfect for kids. Once the machine is on, pull down the handle in front. A hole on top of the machine allows you to add ingredients if you haven’t already. In front of the machine, there is a holder to stack cones and a drip tray so you won’t make a mess.

Frozen treats using frozen fruits.

While it’s not technically ice cream, the Yonanas dessert maker, turns frozen fruits into a healthier alternative. Using frozen and fresh fruits like strawberries and blueberries, the device churns out a creamy, dairy-free soft-serve. All of the parts are dishwasher safe. It comes with a 130 recipe booklet.

The easiest way to make Peanut Butter Cup ice cream.

The Cuisinart ICE-30R makes two-quarts of ice cream, gelato, or sorbet in 25 minutes. A single on-off knob controls its operation. Just place your ice cream in the freezer for a few hours afterward.
